Chanakya (played by Tarun Khanna), a learned Brahmin from Takshashila, arrives in Pataliputra (the capital of Magadh). He is humiliated by Dhana Nanda in the royal court when he tries to advise the king on defending India from Alexander’s potential invasion. Nanda calls him a "pretender" and orders him thrown out. Chanakya, enraged, removes his sacred thread ( janeu ) and swears an oath: "I will uproot the Nanda dynasty and install a true ruler."
