Cole’s Dreamville label, before the Grammy nods, and before Mirrorland , Atlanta duo EarthGang—comprising Olu (formerly Johnny Venus) and WowGr8 (formerly Doctur Dot)—were the enigmatic kings of a niche, psychedelic Southern hip-hop underground. Their 2016 project, Royalty , wasn’t just another mixtape; it was a declaration of independence, a sonic manifesto, and the final piece of a trilogy that cemented their cult status. The Context: From Rags to Riches to Royalty Royalty arrived as the third installment in a thematic EP trilogy. It followed The BetterOffDead (a bootleg mixtape) and the official Rags (2015) and Riches (2015) EPs. Each project explored the duo’s struggle with poverty, identity, and artistic integrity in Atlanta’s Lenox Village neighborhood.
