In the mid-2000s, Apple began using Helvetica Neue as the system font for iOS. When Apple entered the Chinese market in earnest, they faced a problem: Helvetica Neue had no Chinese characters. A Latin font paired with a generic Chinese system font looked inconsistent. The solution was not to draw Chinese characters in a Helvetica style (that would be a massive, separate project). Instead, "CN" means the Latin letters from Helvetica Neue LT Com were paired with a specifically chosen Chinese typeface.
