This paper examines the idiom “close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades” (and its variant including “dogs”) as a lens for understanding risk, reward, and near-success in American entertainment and lifestyle contexts. It also analyzes the Southern rock band that adopted the phrase as a case study in music industry branding.
