The Man in the Garage
She held out her hand.
Tony Stark still reached for his chest every morning. His fingers found soft cotton, not cold metal. No blue glow bled through his shirt. No faint hum accompanied his heartbeat. Just silence.

He opened the bottom drawer of his toolbox. Inside, wrapped in an oily rag, was a single repulsor node. Non-functional. A paperweight. He'd kept it as a reminder not to relapse.
Pepper walked to the whiteboard. She studied the equations, the tiny sketches of repulsor arrays, the note in the corner that read: "Emergency only. I mean it this time."
"Happy?" said a voice from the doorway.
"I could just… one small thing," he whispered to the empty garage. "A gauntlet. Just the left one. For emergencies."
Three hours later, the whiteboard was covered in calculations for a suit that could deploy from a wristwatch. Tony stepped back, breathing hard. His scar itched. His heart pounded—with excitement, not fear.
