The story begins in San Francisco in 1873. The whaling ship Pilgrim is about to set sail for New Zealand. The crew, led by Captain Hull, is experienced. On board is the owner’s five-year-old son, Jack Weldon, his cousin Benedict (an obsessive entomologist), and Jack’s kind and brave guardian, Mrs. Weldon. The main character is Dick Sand , a 15-year-old orphan and the ship’s young but capable sailor. The Tragic Loss of the Captain During the voyage, Captain Hull and the experienced sailors go ashore to hunt whales. The hunt is successful, but tragically, Captain Hull and all the other sailors die when their boat capsizes. The Pilgrim is left without a single adult officer. Left on board are Dick Sand, Mrs. Weldon, Jack, cousin Benedict, the ship’s cook Negoro (a mysterious Portuguese man), and five black sailors. Dick Takes Command Despite his young age, Dick Sand bravely takes command. He knows navigation and shows great skill. However, Negoro secretly plots against him. Negoro is not a real cook; he is a dangerous slave trader and spy. The Deception at Sea Dick Sand wants to sail to the nearest port in South America. But Negoro secretly damages the ship’s compass and changes the direction. Dick doesn’t realize they are no longer heading for South America. After a long voyage, they see land. Dick thinks they have reached Peru, but Negoro has tricked them. They have actually landed on the coast of Angola in Africa – the heart of the slave trade. Life in Africa As soon as they go ashore, Negoro escapes into the jungle. Soon, a group of slave traders led by an evil man named Harris (Negoro’s accomplice) meets the group. Harris pretends to be friendly and tells them they are in Bolivia. He leads them deeper into the jungle, but Dick becomes suspicious. Eventually, Harris reveals the truth: they are in Africa, and all the white characters will be captured. Capture and Suffering The group is captured by the slave traders. Mrs. Weldon and Jack are separated from Dick. Dick, along with the five black sailors and cousin Benedict, is taken into the African interior. They are treated horribly. Mrs. Weldon and Jack are held at a trading post run by the cruel chief Muani Lunga . The Escape and Rescue Dick Sand does not give up. He and his friends plan an escape. Using his intelligence, Dick leads the group across Africa. They face many dangers: wild animals (including a famous scene with a flooded hut and termites), hunger, and attacks from slave traders. Cousin Benedict gets captured by a tribe of cannibals but is saved because they find his collection of insects amusing. Lektira Petnaestogodisnji Kapetan Prepricano
