Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea (2016) offers a devastatingly quiet take. Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is a man paralyzed by grief, but his relationship with his mother (played with brittle sadness by Gretchen Mol) is a footnote in the plot—yet it explains everything.
