He passed a laundromat where a man in a bathrobe was arguing with a dryer. He passed a mural of a cat wearing a crown. He passed a doorway where someone had chalked the words: You are not lost. You are just early.

Inside, the air was thick with grease and secrets. A row of booths hugged the windows, empty except for a man asleep with his head on a crossword puzzle. The counter was sticky chrome. Behind it, a girl with purple hair and tired eyes was wiping the same spot on the counter over and over.
