Introduction In the late 2000s and early 2010s, a new sound dominated dancefloors, radio hits, and YouTube tutorials. That sound came not from a complex modular synth, but from a sleek, preset-driven powerhouse: Nexus 2 by reFX. While purists scoffed at its lack of deep synthesis, producers from house, trance, dubstep, and pop embraced it for one simple reason—it sounded massive right out of the box. What Is Nexus 2? At its core, Nexus 2 is a ROMpler (ROM + sampler). Unlike synthesizers that generate sound from oscillators, filters, and envelopes, Nexus 2 plays back high-quality, professionally recorded samples stored in its library. It then layers on effects, arpeggiators, and modulation—but you cannot design a sound from scratch. Instead, you choose presets, tweak a few macros, and play.
