The gaming industry has experienced significant growth in recent years, with the global market projected to reach $190 billion by 2025 (Newzoo, 2020). However, the rise of free downloads has disrupted the traditional business model, where gamers can access games without paying a premium. Sifu Switch NSP, a highly acclaimed action-adventure game developed by indie studio Sloclap, has been at the center of this phenomenon. The game's availability for free download has sparked debate among gamers, developers, and industry stakeholders.

The concept of free downloads has been extensively studied in various contexts, including music and movie piracy (Shirley & Stahl, 2005; Waldfogel, 2007). Research has shown that free downloads can lead to significant revenue losses for creators and industry stakeholders (Benkler, 2006). In the gaming industry, free downloads have been linked to decreased sales and revenue (Kurnia et al., 2015). However, some studies have also highlighted the potential benefits of free downloads, such as increased visibility and exposure for game developers (Gautier & Metayer, 2015).

The rise of free downloads has significantly altered the gaming industry's business landscape. This paper examines the effects of free downloads on the gaming industry, focusing on the case of Sifu Switch NSP, a popular action-adventure game. We investigate the motivations behind players' decisions to download games for free and the consequences for game developers, publishers, and the industry as a whole. Our analysis reveals that while free downloads may seem beneficial to players, they can have far-reaching implications for the industry, including revenue loss, intellectual property concerns, and shifts in consumer behavior.
