The Pod Generation -

“And that’s why you have this scar,” Luna said, tracing a small line on Rachel’s abdomen from a later, natural birth — her brother, Mateo.

Under my heart, she thought. Finally. They found her, of course. The police arrived within minutes. Mark was called. Lawyers were hired. The news called it the “Pod-napping Heist” and later, more kindly, the “Last Natural Birth.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’d be putting your baby at unnecessary risk,” Rachel’s own mother had told her over breakfast last week. “I love you, darling, but my generation didn’t have options. You do.” The Pod Generation

“Why?”

Mark was quiet for a long time. Then he sat beside her, put his arm around her shoulders, and rested his head against hers.

Rachel didn’t understand at first. But then Sasha placed Rachel’s hand on her own belly — Sasha was 32 weeks pregnant, naturally, illegally — and Rachel felt a foot. A tiny, unmistakable foot pushing outward from inside. “And that’s why you have this scar,” Luna

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” said the technician, a young man named Ellis with kind eyes and a tablet fused to his palm. “The Eden Pod 5.0. Completely self-regulating. Nutrient exchange, temperature control, even neural audio stimulation for early cognitive patterning.”

“Because she kicked me,” Rachel said. “Inside the pod, she kicked. I felt it. Just once. And I realized — no machine will ever remember that. But I will.”

And love, Rachel had learned, was the only thing no machine could ever simulate. They found her, of course

Now, at Week 14, the pod was their nursery, their womb, their shared secret. Rachel visited it every morning before work, pressing her forehead against the warm surface. Sometimes she thought she could feel a flutter — but that was impossible. The pod absorbed all vibrations.

Later, in the bathroom, she caught her reflection. Her belly was flat. No stretch marks. No swollen feet. No midnight kicks. She pressed her hands against her abdomen and waited for something — a response, a presence, a sign.

Karina "ScreamQueen" Adelgaard

– I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!
