The next autumn, Malcolm survives the shooting but is emotionally distant from Anna, who has grown cold. Desperate to redeem his past failure, Malcolm takes on a new case: Cole Sear (voice: Sarathkumar or similar Tamil child artist), a troubled 8-year-old boy. Cole is a social outcast, called a "freak" by his classmates. His single mother, Lynn Sear (voice: Revathi), is worried sick as she finds strange injuries and disturbed drawings in his room.

Feeling his work is done, Malcolm returns home to Anna. She is asleep on the couch, watching their wedding video. He speaks to her, but she doesn't respond. Then, he notices her hand: she is wearing the ring he gave her, but her wedding ring is gone. He looks down at his own stomach. There is no scar. No blood. He touches his back—where Vincent shot him.

Prologue: The Beginning of the End Dr. Malcolm Crowe (voiced in Tamil), a renowned child psychologist in Philadelphia, returns home with his wife Anna after receiving a lifetime achievement award. Suddenly, a former patient, Vincent Grey—whom Malcolm failed to treat years ago—appears naked in their bathroom. Vincent, suffering from severe paranoia and hallucinations, accuses Malcolm of abandoning him. In a fit of rage, Vincent shoots Malcolm in the stomach and then turns the gun on himself. At a birthday party, a terrified Cole is locked in a closet. Suddenly, a ghost of a suffocated boy appears, screaming and vomiting. Cole, frozen in fear, finally learns to stop running.

Malcolm patiently works to gain Cole's trust. After weeks of silence, Cole finally reveals his terrifying secret: "Enakku setha aalungalai paakka mudiyum... Malcolm dismisses this as psychosis, but Cole challenges him: "Ungala nambanum nu nenacha dhaan sonnen... Ippo neenga enna nambala?" ("I told you because I thought I could trust you... The horrifying truth dawns. He looks at the wedding video. Anna is crying, alone. He whispers: "Anna... Naan..." ("Anna... I..."). He realizes: He never survived the shooting. He has been dead for the entire year. Cole could see him because Cole sees dead people. Malcolm was a ghost.

Malcolm walks away into the light, finally at peace. Cole, now brave, tells his mother, "Amma... Ippo bayam illa. Avanga namakku help pannanum nu dhaan varanga." ("Mom... No more fear. They come because they need us to help them.") "Bayam illai endral dhaan uyir irukkirathu. Aana, uyir illai endralum, kadamai irukkirathu." ("Only when there is no fear, there is life. But even without life, there is duty.")

Malcolm realizes the truth: The ghosts are not there to hurt Cole. They need his help to resolve unfinished business. He advises Cole: "Avangala ketta... 'Enna venum?' nu. Avanga pesa vidu." ("Ask them... 'What do you want?' Let them speak.")
