He removes his shoes and coat. “I’m getting in the water with you if you jump. I’m a great swimmer – cold water will kill me in a minute, but I’ll do it.”

They escape. Cal, defeated, wraps his coat around him – forgetting the Heart of the Ocean in the pocket – and bribes his way onto a collapsible boat by holding a lost child.

They flee from Cal’s valet, Lovejoy, who has followed them. They end up inside a locked Renault car in the cargo hold. There, fogging the windows, they make love. Afterward, Rose whispers: “When the ship sinks, I will never let go.” April 14, 11:40 PM. The lookout cries: “Iceberg, right ahead!” Too late. The ship’s steel belly is torn open below the waterline. On the sloping stern, Jack and Rose hold each other. The ship breaks in two. Hundreds fall into the 28°F water.

At the first-class dinner, Jack wears a borrowed tuxedo. He faces cruel stares, but he charms everyone with raw honesty: “I have nothing to lose. I’ve got ten bucks in my pocket. I’ve slept under bridges. And I’ve seen the Atlantic from a cargo ship’s bow. That’s more real than any of this silverware.”

Cal seethes. Rose’s mother, Ruth, whispers: “Your father left us nothing but a good name. This marriage to Cal is our survival.”
