Lena turned up her speakers.

In the distance, a house burned. No—not burned. Un-built. The flames moved backward, consuming smoke, reassembling charred beams into fresh lumber, then into walls, then into a perfect suburban home. Then the home de-aged further—paint peeling on , shingles appearing from dust, until it became a construction site, then an empty lot, then a forest, then nothing.

They always came back.

But there it was. Every night at 4:02 AM, a new fragment appeared on her desktop. 001, then 002… now 026. Each was exactly 4.26 MB. Each had the same timestamp—December 31, 2024, 11:59 PM—as if all 26 files had been created in the last second of a year that hadn't happened yet.

Outside her window, rain began to fall—backward.

Her hand hovered over the mouse.

– Created just now.
