In 1927, engineer Étienne Dufour built his third prototype autogyro—a clumsy, beautiful helicopter-blimp hybrid. He named it Ninette after a waitress who refused his marriage proposal. "She had the nose of a hawk and the heart of a turbine," he wrote. The aircraft was revolutionary: it could hover silently, but it refused to land smoothly. Every descent ended in a comedic crash. Dufour never fixed it. Instead, he toured the French countryside, charging farmers a franc to watch "Ninette attempt to kiss the earth." She never succeeded. But the data from her failures directly informed the rotor designs of the first French military helicopters. A rejected waitress’s name, etched into aviation history.
